Have you ever conjectured if an invisible planet hides at the edge of our planetary system (solar system or if black holes can ricochet through space like intergalactic snooker balls? Could our own galaxy’s black hole have “woken up” with a dramatic bang millions of years ago — and might it do so yet again? While these questions might not have motivated our ancient ancestors to stargaze, contemporary astronomers are digging into these cosmic mysteries as they explore the universe’s farthest reaches. Here are some of the most puzzling objects scientists have encountered, along with the leading theories about their nature.
Researchers suspect the presence of a massive, unseen planet known as Planet Nine, deep within our solar system, far beyond Neptune’s orbit. This hypothetical world, estimated to be 5 to 10 times the mass of Earth, may be swaying the orbits of distant icy objects. Even though no direct evidence has yet been found, the impending Vera C. Rubin Observatory, with its ten-year time-lapse project, might finally debunk or confirm the presence of this elusive planet.
In April 2023, astrophysicists discovered a runaway black hole travelling through space at an astounding speed (4,500 times the speed of sound). This black hole, estimated to be mindboggling 20 million times the mass of our sun, is leaving a trail of stars over 200,000 light-years long. Scientists speculate that it may have been evicted from its galaxy due to a very rare gravitational interaction involving multiple black holes. If confirmed, this would be the very first evidence of a black hole escaping its galaxy.
JWST (The James Webb Space Telescope) recently identified more than 500 rogue planets, branded as Jupiter-mass binary objects (JUMBOs), drifting through the Orion Nebula. These planets, many found in binary pairs, present a noteworthy puzzle for astrophysicists. Theories range from direct formation in intergalactic space to gravitational disturbances by passing stars. The true nature and origins of these rogue planets remain one of the biggest mysteries in astronomy.
The Fermi Bubbles, two massive lobes of energy covering 25,000 light-years above and below the centre of our galaxy, are visible only through X-ray and gamma-ray observations. These structures are thought to be the consequence of a huge explosion from our galaxy’s central black hole, which started around 2.6 million years ago. This recent discovery suggests that our black hole may have been far more active in the recent past than previously thought.
JWST also captured an interesting image of a deep-space formation shaped like a question mark. This ancient object, whose precise nature and distance are unknown, might be a sole galaxy or multiple galaxies in the middle of a chaotic merger. The question mark shape and its reddish hue indicate that it is very old, adding to the list of cosmic enigmas that challenge our understanding of the cosmos.
