New findings captured by JWST (the James Webb Space Telescope) suggest the cosmos is older by almost two times than what scientists previously believed. For years, cosmologists believed the cosmos was around 13.8 billion years old. But new research which takes into account fresh findings from observations seen through the JWST suggests the cosmos could in fact be 26.7 billion years old.
According to existing models, the presence of ‘impossible early galaxies’, named owing to their strange formation periods, are said to have arisen during the cosmic dawn, about 500-800 million years after the Big Bang. A theory famous as the ‘tired light’ theory suggested light loses energy in the course of its long cosmic journeys, resulting in redshift, where light experiences frequency changes, and this indicates a celestial body getting away from us. But as it couldn’t offer explanation for a number of observations, this theory was largely dismissed.
Rajendra Gupta (adjunct professor of physics at the University of Ottawa) said: “I attempted to marry the conventional big-bang model with the tired light theory, hoping to account for both supernovae and JWST data. While this expanded our universe’s age to 19.3 billion years, it couldn’t entirely account for the JWST data.” So, combining the ‘tired light’ theory with a developing cosmological model based on the evolving coupling constants, this novel model accounted for new observations seen from the JWST which stretched the cosmos’s age to 26.7 billion years.
Rajendra Gupta brings into the calculus Swiss astronomer Fritz Zwicky’s 1929 theory. The theory proposes that photons get “tired” as they travel across huge distances, and lose energy over the course of billions of years. While this is incompatible with observable redshift data, Gupta says in a press release that “by allowing this theory to coexist with the expanding universe, it becomes possible to reinterpret the redshift as a hybrid phenomenon, rather than purely due to expansion”.
Increasing the cosmos’s age could help explain some long-standing cosmological dilemmas, as well as some fresh ones discovered by NASA’s JWST. One of the oldest stars known to science, appropriately named Methuselah is, by some estimates, older than the known cosmos. Clearly, that is impossible, though margins of error could place it earlier than the Big Bang. And Methuselah isn’t the lone cosmological anomaly. New James Webb Space Telescope data also bared at least six galaxies way too colossal for how early they formed in the Cosmos’s past.
